Fleet Annual Book Swap:
The first round of book collection for the swap was very successful and with such interests in receiving books for the summer we have added one more collection day, next Friday May 22nd from 9am – 5pm. We will also have the library collection box in the front of the school and ask that you drop off any text you borrowed this year. The summer book bags will be shared with the community June 5th and we will share the times next week.

Arlington County Guidelines:
Good afternoon Arlington County asked that I share the following guidelines for leaving children at home for extended periods of time.

At Home with APS:
APS has provided videos to watch for students in grades K, 1, and 2. Parents can access the videos using this link. The videos are conducted by APS employees on a number of topics including social emotional learning, STEAM, early literacy, and creative thinking.

End of Year School Closure:
APS will be closing school across the county on June 12th to allow teachers time to begin preparing for the
planning and professional development for summer school and a strong reentry to school in the fall. During the week of June 15, teachers and staff will engage in professional development focused on:

  • Reevaluating and redesigning the return to physical school with a focus on additional mental health and social-emotional support for students and help readjusting to the schedule structure and routines;
  • Understanding and adopting best practices related to distance learning to ensure consistency across staff and help teachers implement best practices for instruction;
  • Preparing to teach essential 4th quarter content and adjusting the pacing of the rest of the school year; and Planning for the possible expansion of continuous learning and online coursework should schools not reopen in September

Summer School:
APS is currently planning several options for summer school 2020, and diligently planning for both possibilities and hope to reopen for summer school, even if students are spaced six feet apart. If it’s not possible to open safely, we will be prepared to conduct summer school online

  • There are three plans being considered that depend on several factors guidance from health officials:
    • In-person Summer School in August, if social distancing requirements have been lifted and schools can safely open; or
    • Hybrid in-person and online Summer School in August, if schools can safely open with multiple contingencies to maintain social distancing (e.g. rotating live and online instruction, offering staggered morning and afternoon sessions, doubling sites to allow for social distancing); or
    • Online Summer School in July, if stay-at-home orders persist or if conditions are still unclear in early June, when the decision needs to be made.
  • At the elementary level, summer school would be for students who meet certain criteria previously identified before school closure.
    • Elementary – 1 year below grade level in reading and math (who were previously identified before school closure) and/or reading goals on their IEP. Eligible Pre-K students below grade level academically and on social emotional goals.

APS Continuous Learning Plan:
Please refer to this link on the APS website to access the distance learning format.

Pick-up and Drop off:
Please be aware that the Arlington Police department has had numerous complaints regarding parking in cross walks, parking in the private lots across from Fleet, and parking in the pick-up and drop off lanes. They have placed a message display on South Old Glebe Rd as a warning to refrain from traffic violations. Next week they will be issuing flyers to remind parents of the proper protocols. Following this they have advised me that they will begin to ticket cars that are violating traffic rules.

Principal Coffee:
This month our featured guest was Assistant Superintendent John Chadwick who spoke to several members of the community. Mr. Chadwick stated that additional representatives of Facilities and Construction will be present at our PTA meeting Tuesday. We look forward to hearing from Mr. Chambers, Mr. Pope, and Mr. Stricker.
The next Principal Coffee will be held March 2nd at 9:15am.

Fleet is looking for parent volunteers who would like to lead our walking bus routes in the future.

Flu Season
The Fleet clinic has seen a rise of students this month reporting flu like symptoms. The flu is a respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus.  It spreads easily between people and can cause severe illness. People who are sick with flu will have some or all these symptoms: fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, and feeling tired (fatigue). To help keep yourself and your family healthy Arlington County has provided the following tips https://www.apsva.us/post/winter-illness-message-from-school-health/To stop flu from spreading to others, keep children home when they are ill.
If your child has flu symptoms, he or she should remain home and away from others (including after school activities, sports teams, and social gatherings) until the fever has been gone for 24 hours (without fever reducing medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol®), ibuprofen (Advil®) or other treatment) and symptoms are better. If your doctor or healthcare provider prescribes treatment for your child, follow all directions for taking the medicine.

Winter Break:
The staff at Fleet want to wish students and families a wonderful break and safe travels to those who are visiting family outside of the DMV area. We look forward to seeing our wonderful Falcons in the new year!!!

Fire Drill:
We routinely practice safety drills throughout the year to ensure our students and staff are aware of the procedures during emergency situations.
This morning the school conducted a monthly fire drill, students and staff evacuated quickly and without incident. An earlier school talk was sent out this afternoon that addressed an afternoon evacuation of the building.

Winter Concert:
The music department held the first official Fleet Winter concert on December 18th, and it was a joy to hear our 4th and 5th graders perform such wonderful melodies and what an opportunity to hear such angelic voices. A special thank you to Erin Pavolko, Keenan Hall, and Estelle Roth for the hard work they did in outing this wonderful event together. You can follow the Fleet Music department on twitter @APSFleetMusic.

Fleet Building Updates:
With the end of 2019 and the completion of our first four months in the building, it’s a great time to review the current state of Alice West Fleet. Many of the items in the building are complete, there remain items undergoing construction behind the scenes, we are still awaiting many of our internal graphics, the balance of our solar panels, to name a few. The ongoing construction does not interfere with instruction, is done during non-school hours and days students are not in the building.

Safety: This week at Fleet a power transformer went out causing a Phase I power failure at the school. It did not knock out power for the entire building but shut down certain systems in the building. The wonderful news is that staff and students took the outage in stride and completed another teaching and learning day with only some minor hiccups. Dominion was able to restore power that evening and Arlington Public School Department of Facilities was aware and working with the school to guarantee we were in a safe learning environment.

Safety: We routinely practice safety drills throughout the year to ensure our students and staff are aware of the procedures during emergency situations.  The morning of Halloween, the Fleet staff and students practiced an earthquake drill. Handicap Parking: The parking garage has seven designated parking locations for parents, visitors, and staff members who are in need of the designated parking. The parking spaces are located near the parking garage elevator and is accessible to all visitors during garage hours. The elevator will place you closest to door C9 and you are asked to come to door A1 to sign into the main office.

Halloween Parade: Thank you to all who attended our indoor dance party. While the weather did not cooperate we were very thankful that the Thomas Jefferson Marching Band were so willing to perform in the Gym for our students. The impromptu dance party was a blast and allowed all our students to showcase their costumes while enjoying some time sharing their dance moves with one another. The students were so excited to see all the parents and family members who were able to join us.
