October is AAC Awareness Month! AAC stands for augmentative and alternative communication. There are many students at Fleet and throughout APS who use AAC systems to communicate!
Fleet is hosting its first AAC Awareness Week October 7th-11th. To kick off the week, Monday Morning, we will have several “AAC Coffee Carts” for staff to order a drink from, using only AAC devices!
Throughout the week Brittany Thomas, speech pathologist here at Fleet, will be going into each classroom and completing a lesson, including hands-on time for all students to explore AAC systems.
On October 17th, Fleet is hosting an AAC Panel Parent Night from 7-8:30 in the library. This panel will include a student who uses AAC, parent, speech pathologist, and general education teacher. We hope to answer questions and share stories on how we support students with AAC systems in our schools, home, and community using a team approach!
