Fleet families the Art, Music, and PE kits are available for families to pick up from the building. If your child is in
Grades K – 2 they will receive the following (Art Kit, Egg Shaker & Drum, Sidewalk Chalk & Hackey Sack)
Grades 3 – 5 will receive the following (Art Kit, Egg Shaker & Recorder, Ball & Jump Rope).

Thanksgiving Food Drive:
It is that time of the year again! Fleet is asking for you to consider donating this year.  Money collected in year’s past was used to purchase fresh food items to support the canned and boxed food items that came in from students. Fleet staff would go to Giant and purchase fresh turkeys, potatoes, carrots, celery, onions, pies etc. All fresh foods and donated nonperishable foods would then be sorted and distributed to about a dozen Fleet families in need. This year we are once again asking for Gift Card donations to help families in need. Fleet will be accepting donations beginning Monday, November 9th – Friday, November 20th.

Snowflake Drive: Fleet will continue our tradition of supporting families in need this year with our annual Snowflake Drive. After Thanksgiving we will place snowflakes on the wall outside of our main door and we ask those who can to please take a snowflake. All items can be dropped back off to Fleet until December 16th.

Fleet Playground:
If you stop by in the next few weeks you will see in the southeast corner of our playground has received a delivery of crates. This is the beginning of Phase I of the remodeling of our playground. We are hoping for good weather over the next few weeks to allow the construction crew to begin installing the new equipment. What a wonderful surprise for our students to discover prior to our return to school in 2021.

Library:
Fleet is pleased to announce beginning the week of November 2nd we will be expanding the times parents can pick up their child’s library books. Holds can be placed at any time but please do not come to Fleet to pick up library books until you check your child’s account and see that the books have been checked out.  Books will be held in the school lobby for one week. Fleet Social Group Drop Ins: Would your kids like a socially distanced hang-out opportunity with their classmates and peers? They are invited to join a ‘Drop-In Social Group’ teams meeting with the counselors & meet old and new friends. This Monday’s topics include pets and sports.  If these times or topics don’t work, no problem, we will hold similar gatherings on future Mondays.  Also, feel free to suggest topics for future ‘Drop-In Social Groups’. 100th Birthday Celebration:
Hello Fleet Friends and Families! We have a legend in our neighborhood! Her name is Mrs. Ola and she is turning 100 years old on November 14th. Mrs. Ola is our neighbor, dear friend, mentor, and honorary neighborhood Grandma and we would love to celebrate her with 100 birthday cards! She spent 30 years as a civilian in the United States Marine Corp, fought for civil rights, and has changed the world with her kindness. She was even friends with Ms. Alice West Fleet! Our goal is to collect 100 cards to give to Mrs. Ola on her birthday. This is a great opportunity for your child to write for an authentic and meaningful purpose!

Read A Thon:
The PTA is holding our annual Fleet Read-a-Thon soon! The dates are November 4-13, and this year the reading logs will be in SeeSaw so all students have easy access. As a reminder, the following activities count as reading: reading, being read to, looking at books (for pre-readers), practicing reading. The purpose is to cultivate a love of reading, so whatever helps your kiddo(s) learn to love reading is what we’re looking for!
Dates: November 4-13
Where: The reading logs will be in SeeSaw for all grade levels. Your student(s) can enter their reading time in the Read-a-Thon SeeSaw assignment.
Rewards: The fundraising rewards are listed in the attached PowerPoint, we will also have rewards for all readers who turn in their SeeSaw logs, top readers for each grade, and top reader for the school.

Parent Interactions:
In recent weeks the frustration of some parents has led to poor interactions with Fleet staff members.  We understand the frustrations, concerns, and challenges presented with virtual learning; these are all beyond the control of teachers and school staff. While we share some of your concerns, our goal is to always foster a collaborative working relationship to ensure the ongoing support for our students and families.  Our staff work hard daily to provide the greatest possible virtual learning environment and spend countless hours planning, preparing, and designing instruction to meet the needs of every child. We continue to ask for some grace as we are all working through these unprecedented times together.

Artome: Fleet Families! Our annual art show was cancelled last year due to Covid-19 restrictions. Supporting Independence:
Thank you to all our parents who have worked closely with our falcons to start their distance learning journey. As we continue with Distance Learning, we ask that parents begin to encourage our students to become more independent in their activities and logging in.

  • Print out their schedule and remind your child of their log-in time for class; setting the alarm for critical moments can be very helpful (start of school, lunch, movement breaks) as they become familiar with their day.
  •  Remind them to charge their iPads every night
  • Be around but not next to them to begin to stretch out those wings of independence.
  • Encourage them to walk away from the iPad during breaks and lunch
  • Ask them to share something they learned with you at the end of the day.

APS Toolkits:
Arlington Public Schools has ordered a toolkit for every student Prek-5, and we are expecting the delivery of the items next week. Once they are delivered, we will repackage them by grade level and share them with the community times they can come to get the toolkits.

Monday Asynchronous Activities:
Staff will post activities by 9 am every Monday for students to complete at home. The expected time to complete such activities is two hours and forty minutes, but some students, as in school, may complete activities either faster or slower than the expected time. If your child becomes frustrated or is unable to complete the work, please email the teacher so they are aware and can address any concerns in the classroom.

Fleet is excited to share with families our library holds and pickup procedures during Distance Learning. Teachers and staff cannot wait to see which books our falcons select and share with the families. Below are our guidelines:

First Week School:
What a fabulous first week of school we’ve had!!! It was incredible to see all our students online as we settle into the groove for virtual learning. I know we had a bit of a bumpy start on Tuesday, but by Friday, students were happy and participating in so many new and dynamic activities.

I want to announce that our new school Librarian Ms. Womack will be conducting classroom visits over the next few weeks to teach all students about our online reservation system for the library. We will begin distributing books Thursday, September 24, from 10 am – 6 pm. We are excited to open our library and have our falcons reading their favorite books and sharing with families the new adventures they undertake with their imaginations.

iPad Sign up
Our iPad distribution this week was very successful with over 300+ iPads distributed to families by our staff. If you were unable to pick-up your child’s iPad this week, staff will be on hand Tuesday morning to assists all families.

Please ensure you have an active ParentVue account, APS requires that all families have an active ParentVUE account so families can view important student information, such as class assignments, and track your child’s progress. Families without active ParentVUE accounts should contact their child’s school for an activation key.

  • Confirm your students are listed in ParentVUE: Once logged in, please confirm that all of your currently enrolled APS children are listed. If any of your children are not listed, please contact your child’s school immediately.

iPad Sign up
Arlington Public Schools is providing an iPad for every student from grades K-5 this year. If you are a new family to APS, we ask that you click this link to sign-up for a time next week to come to Fleet and sign for your child’s iPad.
Please review the available times and click the button to sign up for your APS issued iPad. iPads will be available for pick up on Monday, August 31 (8:30 – 7:00 pm), Tuesday, September 1 (8:30 – 7:00 pm), and Wednesday, September 2 (8:30 – 2:00 pm).
Families will be asked to sign a receipt of your iPad when you arrive at your pre-scheduled time.

Back to School Night
Fleet will be hosting our Open House and Back to School Night the week of August 31st. Please review the schedule below to join your child’s grade level town hall. Welcome Back!
Let me be the first to welcome back everyone to the start of the 2020-21 school year. I understand that there is anxiety about what distance learning will be like when we return. We have all learned so much over the past five months. Please be reassured that we have been learning how to better engage with students using technology. Teachers are preparing to teach new content, work with students in small groups, and work with you to make it successful. We are fortunate to have incredibly talented, hard-working, and creative teachers at Fleet. Many of our teachers have spent the summer engaged in professional development to sharpen their technology skills to develop personalized instruction to meet each child’s individual needs. Our teachers are developing lessons that explicitly teach students the skills and strategies needed to grow as learners. Thank you for allowing us to serve your children and provide them with a positive and enriching learning experience. Get ready for a fantastic year!

Classroom Letter
We have sent out the classroom assignment letters and should arrive shortly to every family over the next few days. Your welcome back letters also contain your teacher assignment and virtual schedules to help you plan how the virtual day will look for your child.

Grade level schedules
Will be posted on our website to allow for you to review and download at your convenience.

Back to School Night
Fleet will be hosting our Open House and Back to School Night the week of August 31st. Please review the schedule below to join your child’s grade level town hall. Parents will have an opportunity to meet your teacher and ask questions regarding the upcoming school year. A Microsoft TEAMS Live email will go out to every parent by grade level, please check your email the day before for your invite. All meetings will be recorded and posted to our website
